<body>
<p>Mental health of higher education students is a growing concern around the globe. Even before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of mental health problems among higher education students was already worrying. The Healthy Minds Network, a US national research organization, showed that depression and anxiety were found in 37.1 and 31.3% of higher education students, respectively (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">1</xref>). Higher education students encounter transitional challenges and stressors while preparing themselves to enter adulthood. Besides academic burdens, university students struggle to fulfill expectations from family, adapt to a drastic change in the learning environment, develop good relationships with peers, and overcome financial problems. The unprecedented wave of COVID-19 further worsened the already serious problems. Many students experienced psychological distress during the pandemic, including anxiety, stress, and even suicidal ideation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2</xref>&#x02013;<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">5</xref>). This Research Topic attempts to gather empirical findings from all over the world to broaden our understanding of the mental health of higher education students.</p>
<p>This Research Topic collects 34 studies on the mental health of higher education students, with more than 120,000 participants from 18 countries, among nationwide (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.893845">Gavurova et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.845978">Jiang et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.915697">Qian et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.868369">Wathelet et al.</ext-link>). Studies in the Research Topic investigated a wide range of mental health outcomes, from symptom-related outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and stress (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.903946">Schwander-Maire et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.855607">Thang et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.833263">Vald&#x000E9;s et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.868369">Wathelet et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.878884">Ying et al.</ext-link>), insomnia (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.871137">Stanyte et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.868072">Zhang et al.</ext-link>), to behavioral problems such as internet addiction (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.893861">Diotaiuti et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.893845">Gavurova et al.</ext-link>), mobile phone addiction (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.902425">Li X. et al.</ext-link>), school engagement (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.849594">Versteeg et al.</ext-link>), academic performance (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.922892">AbuAlSamen and El-Elimat</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.869337">Deng et al.</ext-link>), and problem gaming behavior (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.940281">Tang et al.</ext-link>).</p>
<p>A vast array of factors associated with the outcomes were examined, including hope (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.903946">Schwander-Maire et al.</ext-link>), impulsivity (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.893861">Diotaiuti et al.</ext-link>), family functioning (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.915697">Qian et al.</ext-link>), resilience (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.849594">Versteeg et al.</ext-link>), shyness (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.902425">Li X. et al.</ext-link>), cyberloafing (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.905699">Li Q. et al.</ext-link>). Three studies provided evidence with quantitative analysis to validate the instruments in their populations (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.922892">AbuAlSamen and El-Elimat</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.872436">Fung et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2022.818749">Guelmami et al.</ext-link>). Findings in this Research Topic help aggregate knowledge in literature for mental health promotion of higher education students and suggest actionable strategies for future interventions and policies.</p>
